The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on socialeconomicpolitical and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers 7 Bachelor and 20 Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

The holder of the position will be a member of the Department of Education and Social Work within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

The holder will conduct research and teaching on health-related interventions, with a specific focus on critical understandings of mental health and an interest in community services.

 Your Role...

The holder’s expertise should be informed by disciplinary fields such as psychosocial studies, sociology of (medical/psychosocial) knowledge, disability studies, gender studies, social work, public health or mad studies.

The holder of the position should have a strong theoretical and methodological agenda, specifically in the context of health, well-being and psychosocial and/or educational service provision. This agenda should be grounded in a conceptual understanding of the structural conditions and sources that influence identities, well-being and discontent, the effects and outcomes of social and educational interventions, and their consequences for communities and societies. Furthermore, the holder should have experience in applying and/or innovating appropriate methodologies of social intervention as well as scientific methodologies and concepts of their study.

Theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and empirical fields should contribute to at least two of the following research domains:

  • Social conditions and treatment of various mental and health disorders, including substance abuse, depression, and anxiety
  • Processes of socialization and subjectivation in the context of welfare and social/psychosocial service provision
  • Knowledge production in the field of illness and reactions such as antipsychiatry and self-advocacy
  • Gender, sexuality, and disability in their relation to social and reproductive justice
  • Psychosocial risks of inequality such as polarization and radicalization
  • Inclusion and participation: contributions of community-based and civil society initiatives to well-being and health

Teaching areas

The holder of the position will teach courses on such topics as: Society, illness & well-being; design of social/psychosocial interventions; evaluating the conditions, effects & outcomes of social/psychosocial services.

The holder will mainly provide teaching in the following programmes:

  • Bachelor en Sciences Sociales et Éducatives (BSSE)
  • Master in Social Sciences and Education (MASSES)
  • Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences

All of these and potential future programmes are involved in the ongoing transformation of Luxembourg’s educational and psychosocial services and need methodological and topical expertise that allows them to contribute to the ongoing reform and innovation of Luxembourg’s welfare state.

 What we expect from you…

  • Ph.D. degree in sociology, social work, psychology, education, anthropology, or related fields
  • At least 3 years of postdoctoral experience acquired in a university or comparable research centre
  • A strong international research profile, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, conference participation, and collaboration in national and/or international research and policy initiatives
  • Experience in acquiring and managing research projects, as well as in disseminating and transferring knowledge to different audiences
  • University-level teaching experience (documented, including mentoring, and tutoring of students and early-career academics)
  • Willingness to engage in teamwork in teaching and research groups; and
  • Ability to work autonomously

Language requirements

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in French and English. The University encourages its staff to learn German and provides access to language courses to this end.
